You can. The book is by Diana Wynne Jones, and while the start is very similar
to the film, about half way through it starts to change very very drastically.
It's a very fun read, and perhaps just as enjoyable (if not more) than the film.
You should be able to find it pretty easily on eBay or Amazon.
