Temperature is a human made measurement of the natural world; Good, bad, moral
and immoral are human constructs to define mentality, I have heard absolutely
nothing anywhere to suggest otherwise, which is why I don't believe they are
measurable. If god exists and has a moral measure somewhere that can completely
asses a set of circumstances and give a 'morality measurement', then I'm
completely happy to accept that. Until then I don't believe it is measurable (in
terms of any form of accuracy). Before the thermometer was invented, I would
agree heat and cold were to an extent immeasurable. Hot, cold, warm, freezing
were the terms of measurement. Not very accurate but enough to prove the
point.
As far as I know it is as accurately measurable as any physical quantity, based
on the damage it does:
"And if any injury occurs, then you shall give life for life, eye for eye,
tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burning for burning, wound for
wound, stripe for stripe." - Exodus 21:23-25
Of course today we don't actually do this, but we do try an met out equivalent
(estimated) punishment in the court of law with monetary sums and jail terms.
Just like hot or cold without a thermometer, even if there is absolutely no way
to know whether we're making an accurate measurement, people might use the terms
like "despicable", "praiseworthy" or "diabolical"
to measure the morality of an action. Not accurate at all but enough to prove a
point.
Quote by littlejonny100
At this point in existence morality is measured the same way the temperature was
before the thermometer, and remember that not everyone thought the same day was
freezing. A judge is what humans have created to determine morals for us, why?
Because we can't decide ourselves. Any judge will say downloading a song is
illegal (hence immoral), how many people would agree? When I say morality is not
measurable I am referring to what you said, that there is absolutely no way to
know whether we're making an accurate judgement, because we're only human. It
doesn't seem fit to measure something as important as morality with little
perception of realistic accuracy.
The judge did not "determine" morals for us as if he just plucked it
out of thin air. (or his imagination) His morals are based on the law of justice
and fairness God put in our hearts. If they weren't there might be a revolt, or
civil war. For example discrimination against blacks. Black would disagree.
Whites might agree with it but that's only because it is beneficial to them, not
because they think that it is right. Your example of downloading songs also
serves to illustrate this point. Many people would disagree only because they
benefit from free downloading of songs, not because they think it is the moral
thing to do. (same goes with porn)
Quote by littlejonny100
Using the starving family as an example, my train of thought says that it would
be neutral to do nothing, as oppose to taking advantage of that families poor
position to subject them to something like slavery (which has been done plenty
of times through history). You can't possibly put doing nothing and subjecting
to slavery on the same level, however at the same time doing nothing shouldn't
be classed as a good deed, which is why I believe you must include a level of
neutrality before moving towards evil. I'm not saying neutrality is a definite
position of innocent ignorance, but an in-between.
I provided the second exmaple to illustrate how it would not be neutral to do
nothing in case the first wasn't obvious enough. In case you missed it, I'll say
something like it again: If you saw a person's life support system mulfuctions
in a hospital, and did not report it to the doctor, would it be neutral? I'll
even say it can be at the same level as subjecting to slavery, depending on how
much you know about what you ought to do and not do it.
Quote by littlejonny100
You did read the original article I was replying to right? If not I'll forgive
your last statements, if you did then your accusation is just plain offensive. I
never suggested anyone was brainless. In the article, if you used the christians
reasoning to suggest the professor was brainless, you would also be suggesting
more than half the human race was brainless. I was pointing out that this was an
absurd set of reasoning and more absurd conclusion. I wasn't saying people are
actually brainless, sorry if you thought otherwise. Also by calling him a moron
I was referring specifically to that part, there was no connection to his views
of monism.
I respect others views and believe everyone is entitled to their own, however
when someone uses obviously flawed reasoning to prove someone lacks a brain and
that's used as justification of gods existence, I draw a line. I would never
belittle someone personally for such a view however outrageous ideas always
create plenty of discussable controversy.
I did read it. And while I disagreed with the part on the brain thing, I found
the fact that you called them brainless offensive. It's like calling someone who
does his math problems wrong half way through stupid. It's not as if any of us
are perfect all the time with our reasoning. (is there such a thing as christian
reasoning? this is the first time I've heard of it)
My apologies for thinking that you weren't that specific which your labelling of
moron. I won't belittle someone no matter how obviously flawed their reasoning
is unless I feel that they're being stubborn. (which might not be the right
thing to do either) But then, this is a matter of temperment, (and values) the
discussion is more interesting so let's drop this part.
Quote by littlejonny100In terms of
consumption I would have to say I drink a lot of alcohol, however I very rarely
become drunk (btw legal age in Australia is 18 years old). Becoming drunk isn't
really that great at all, however the 'tipsy' period just before it I find is a
pleasant state. In terms of the effect alcohol will make you think your doing
things better than you actually are, and will gradually slow down all your
reactions and though processes.
In terms of how it effects you emotions, it depends how you felt before you
started drinking. If your drinking because your depressed your going to become
horribly depressed. If your drinking for fun then you'll eventually find
absolutely everything funny, if your drinking because your bored you'll suddenly
find something to distract you from that boredom.
The most important thing about alcohol is knowing your own personal limits,
because they are very different to those around you. Where half a bottle of rum
might make one person tipsy, it could give another person a terrible hangover.
One keystone in alcohol consumption is while experimenting, the first time you
do "something really stupid". That personal stupid experience is what
creates a respect for the power of alcohol......then there are people who never
learn (Ask nicely and I'll tell you my stupid experience but no
thinking less of me).
Thank you for replying to my thread, you say such wise things. Guess you got a
lot of experience, hehe Legal

You made me really curious to your experience. Plz tell me your story, I won't

Quote by littlejonny100
I would agree that cold is the absence of heat and dark is the absence of light,
however good, bad, moral, immoral etc are all human concepts. They are based
entirely upon opinion and have no measurable ability so it's really a very
stupid thing to say. You can't place something of nature next to a
pronoun.
I do not think that good, bad, moral, immoral are entirely based upon opinion.
While it is true that people sometimes disagree with each other about what they
think is moral or immoral, but the disagreements on a whole are minor compared
to agreements. If I go to an old folk's home and crack an elderly lady's head
with a mace for no good reason, I doubt you're going to accept my 'opinion' that
what I did was moral, and neither will the judge.
Hot and cold cannot be measured without a thermometer, but does that mean before
the thermometer was invented it was immeasurable?
You might then say but moral and immoral isn't measurable like hot and cold,
however if that is so, then why do we have different penalties for different
crimes? If stealing and corruption are immeasurable offenses, then they should
all have the same punishment. But the fact is that we do measure them, whether
we are accurate or not is another matter.
Quote by littlejonny100
The christian person also states there 'evil being the absence of good'. Again
there's a neutrality in the middle separating the two. You can do something good
or you can do nothing at all.....or you can go out of your way to do something
evil. The christian is putting someone who's in a neutral position doing nothing
on the same level as someone who goes out of their way to destroy lives,
ignoring the fact the scale actually works both ways.
In conclusion not only did that jolly good christian prove the professor doesn't
have a brain, but also that he himself didn't and probably that 99% of people
don't have a brain, what a jolly clever fella he is (and what a moron to think
that justifies god).
While it is true, (and also in the above case) that some of us disagree on what
is good, I do not agree with you that there's neutrality in the middle
separating the two. If I have plenty to eat and I see a family starving to
death, it will not be 'neutral' to do nothing. It will be just easy to do
nothing, however it will still be immoral. If a soldier sees an enemy
approaching and does not report it to his commander, would his commader let him
off if he knew about it? (because he did nothing)
At the heart of your beliefs about this is the belief in dualism. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dualism
the belief that good and evil are 2 equally strong opposites, and thus there's a
'neutral' in between) However I only believe in good, and evil as an absence of
it, a belief known as Monism, ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monism
) which CS Lewis also took in his book, Mere Christianity. Take for example a
poor widow. Would giving her a penny when you are rich be considered good? I
would say it's a step in the right direction, but it will not be good enough.
(just as there is some light but it is still dark)
Without good knowledge of philosophical concepts, (hopefully even if you do have
a good grasp) I hope you will refrain from labelling others as brainless in
future. While I do disgree with the dualistic model, I do not think it is
honorable to call someone with another view as brainless.

This has been addressed through the guestbook, it is not a bug and the situation
is concluded.
I Just stady English ((((
Quote by alexjohnc3Why would being
able to ignore facts be a blessing? I can't tell if you're kidding. o.o
At least in the case you mentioned, they realize they need "facts" if
they expect anyone to believe them. =P
There are generally two types of religious people who preach their cause. Those
who deafly preach and those who have an answer to everything.
Someone who's ignoring the facts (the type of person who will quote a completley
irrelevant bible passage to answer a question) is bad, however when compared to
those who have an answer to everything (those who make up completely bull
counter-facts), you realise you can forgive the first
person.
I suppose, but either way it says, in my opinion, a lot about humanity. Most
people wouldn't see a problem with quoting something in the Bible, regardless of
whether or not it actually answers the question, or some false "fact,"
as long as the "fact" appears to be true to them. For example, some
Christians often say atheists believe in God deep down, but say they don't so
they can justify acting sinful and immoral. Often, Christians will accept that
as true at face value without trying to think objectively at all. If they were
to succeed in thinking objectively, they would realize it is possible that
saying atheists actually don't disbelieve in God is an attempt at both making
atheists look immoral and irresponsible and an attempt at dehumanizing
them.
As you can see, I've become pretty pessimistic about humans.
Quote by littlejonny100I already
left this thread because it had become obviously off-topic however I'm now back
to add a more solid remark. I'm not sure how much you picked up kingray100 but I
have spent most my life in fairly religious environments. Of those 8 years were
spent in a christian orientated school. I haven't just been told about
christianity but have explored it myself, as I'm sure many other atheists here
have done and can understand a mentality simple to yours. In saying this I
wanted to point out that I think most people posting here already know what your
replies will be well before you post as well as which posts you'll choose to
ignore (and probably aren't far from the mark every time).
I've doubted god for a very long time, however I've always repected religion and
been on the deciding line about any doubts for religion itself. It's people like
you who have driven me well and truly to the other side of the line. From not
believing in god, your bigotry has made me no longer believe in religion either.
You say your trying to spread the truth. If you want god to have more followers
I think you should just stop telling people about him because your pushy
attitude is doing nothing but pushing people further from him.
I'm quite confident everyone here who had questions will agree with me, they've
never been further from the truth. If you just want to prove YOUR point then
post to your hearts content however if you truly want people to have more belief
in christianty, your posts here (in an atheist only thread) are only making it
look bad.
Wow, just a magnificent post, and absolutely right on target.

Sure, I've become interested in religion lately and
I've reached the point where I hate it. I'm now apart of the eternal struggle to
properly figure out exactly 'why' people believe in god, aka
atheism.
That's a relatively easy question to answer. It's
because God didn't do such a great job on humans when we were
"intelligently" designed. Based on our current understanding of the
Universe, a god doesn't seem very likely, especially not the Christian god which
has so many human-like flaws (e.g., wanting to be worshiped for no good reason
or just to fill its ego) that it's pathetic. One thing that really annoys me is
how fundamentalist Christians talk about how the world is so perfect that it
must have been designed. They completely
ignore the fact that there are scientific theories that are not only more
plausible than their faith, but also evidence-based, that explain how the
complexity and "perfection" that we observe could exist. Not only do
they ignore that, but they also ignore all the flaws in such a perfect,
intelligent entity's design.

than ignore the proven facts, make up complete BS counter-facts of their

Why would being able to ignore facts be a blessing? I

Often, Christians will accept that as true at face value without trying to think objectively at all. If they were to succeed in thinking objectively, they would realize it is possible that saying atheists actually don't disbelieve in God is an attempt at both making atheists look immoral and irresponsible and an attempt at dehumanizing them.
As you can see, I've become pretty pessimistic about humans.
Wow, just a magnificent post, and absolutely right on target.
Hope you don't mind me commenting.

That's a relatively easy question to answer. It's because God didn't do such a great job on humans when we were "intelligently" designed. Based on our current understanding of the Universe, a god doesn't seem very likely, especially not the Christian god which has so many human-like flaws (e.g., wanting to be worshiped for no good reason or just to fill its ego) that it's pathetic. One thing that really annoys me is how fundamentalist Christians talk about how the world is so perfect that it must have been designed. They completely ignore the fact that there are scientific theories that are not only more plausible than their faith, but also evidence-based, that explain how the complexity and "perfection" that we observe could exist. Not only do they ignore that, but they also ignore all the flaws in such a perfect, intelligent entity's design.

Why would being able to ignore facts be a blessing? I can't tell if you're kidding. o.o
At least in the case you mentioned, they realize they need "facts" if they expect anyone to believe them. =P
