Quote by kuroimisaYup, you're completely right about the forums and just about everything.

We've noticed the trend with the really poorly thought out forum replies and the thank you messages. We're thinking of ways to reduce those thank you messages: simply because they are spam (if they are in text form, minus the images we don't really care as much, but overall they shouldn't be copy and paste messages) and it encourages people to just fave everything to get guestbook replies, friend adds and a couple of other things. We don't mind the activity, but as you said, it's shallow and it's not a very meaningful kind of interaction. We're hoping to somehow tweak that so that we'd get less of those messages.

As for the forums, they've long been kind of crappy because people simply don't want to engage in long discussions. They want to keep their posts short and get the credits in rolling. And it's usually these threads that engage people... there was some stuff here: Problems with Minitokyo and How to Address Them: a Discussion

There's a bunch of stuff many members have written down... we haven't really implemented any of those, though.

The forum is hard to change or fix though- it has to do with the community and communal or collective objectives of the posters. Some people post for credits, others recreation, and some really do want to engage themselves in the community.

I guess a lot of this forum and stuff just happened to be the result of the general community- we had a different community back then (smaller and probably people wanted to work for their levels). The thing about levels which is so appealing, is the privileges you could get: level 10, unlimited downloads, level 20, groups, level 50, shoutbox, level 100, legend. In a way, it really did give Minitokyo a hierarchical kind of thing- you felt pleased to be "elevated" than many others, but as a result it ended up in elitism and bullying of others.
In reality, the levels weren't really an indication of superiority- they were only just indications of how active (or hyperactive :P) you were on Minitokyo. But this made people very active... which kind of just worked *_* (even though people abused the system...)
There were those who would do anything to get up to those levels quickly in order to gain a "higher status" when they clearly didn't deserve to: a tasteless ecchi wallpaper which would make you gain 2 levels overnight. And so on.

Without these levels, I guess people found the prospect of earning credits to actually be able to do the things they previously could do for "free" or get to very easily (I remember I got to level 10 in like a week) unattractive.

In a way, I see some benefits of the previous system (no use making leeching accounts, because you couldn't download scans until level 10... or at least I think so anyway- too long to remember :\) and the activity bursting through.
But then there are some in this system- I personally think it's fairer and everyone is much much more equal.

But at the same time when everyone is so equal, it almost... makes the community really generalised...? It might be a very simplistic way of putting it, but I guess it's sort of like "who cares about what I write- even if it's stupid. Nobody will care". Whereas I think the in the previous system, I'm sure there are some people who are like "ZOMG I'm level 95, I must act like I'm a really mature person and really helpful member to the community- MAYBE I MIGHT GET PROMOTED WHEN I GET TO LEVEL 100! YES!" and then write something meaningful at least.

I guess, whether or not anyone had that kind of motive isn't very important: I guess the important thing is that the levels did somewhat influence even the most immature people into writing something thoughtful to contribute. Whereas nowadays, people (though very very few) have their eyes on an elite member status (it's just human nature to want higher levels, or a pretty username)- simply because there are priviliges- again!

It's that sort of curiosity that makes people want to keep contributing good things because they want to know what kind of privileges there are. And by saying that, people will eventually do things, hoping that it'll help them step by step closer to satisfying that curiosity: making reports, writing good posts, posting good gallery items and comments- writing good guestbook posts to have more closer friends in the community and setting themselves out a very good image.

Anyway, I've gotten a bit off topic and farfetched lol, but I guess part of the problem with the forums is that people stopped posting at least meaningful posts (a great majority, anyway), because they don't believe that there is a need to write anything thoughtful or long. They want to get the credits in order to download more and be able to privilege themself when they want to make a new group or download gallery items. The privileges of status and the curiosity of levels and "I wonder what a shoutbox looks like..." has been minimised to basically only "what privileges do admins/ elites/ mods/ retired mods have?" - because we have eliminated the numerical levels and their assigned bonuses.

I wish there was something we could do to elevate this level of curiosity in the community- and I highly doubt that the levels system would ever come back. But it would probably be great if there was a similar thing- only less hierarchical.

Anyway, sorry for the longwinded post!

^^/

I appreciate your reply Misa-chan ^_^. It's good to hear that I'm not the only one who has been aware of these trends.

I actually was not aware that there was no leeching safeguard anymore, although I suppose the credits to act as that. As you said, I too enjoyed the level system to be honest. It made me strive a little harder, but then again only to a point. I noticed some of the elitism associated with that system. When I first started out, having to reach level ten to download scans was a great goal to reach. I was very happy with this because it made me interact with the community, and back then this place did seem more vibrant.

Now we might all be equal, but as you have mentioned people don't really contribute to the community as much. I strongly believe that the forum would benefit from having thread reply notifications. It won't solve anything, but for many people it will give them the opportunity to continue a discussion. This is because I see one of the problems being that people do not return to thread once they posted in them.

People will still post random stuff, as they always do. But those who are interested in a topic will then be able to come back to it easier and continue to take part in it.

And concerning the pointless GB posts, especially the "comment/fav" ones, I'm not exactly sure. One of the things I have noticed though, is that many users are not writing. They will simply post an image, which has a generic "thanks" in it. So this isn't even a post, but spam as you have noted. I believe that there is not usually a necessity for images in GB posts. It's an interesting novelty, and I don't mind it when holidays come around. So maybe, the thing to do would be to disable the image tags in GB posts. If we want holiday "cards" then there could be a designated day or two for each holiday where the images are allowed. Not having images in GB posts would also improve speed. Just think how many images are in user's GBs, that would then not have to be loaded anymore?

When you can't post images anymore, you are forced to actually write something. What a novel idea! XD This would force some people to be a little more personal in their "thank yous."

Overall, I don't think there's a magic pill to save MT from all the negatives. Sometimes I get frustrated with how slow the servers are, especially when they sort of randomly stop responding. So I think that a few limits on posting content would help. The elimination of images in GB posts would be a good start. Additionally I think there should also be a limit on content in userpages. Some people have so much crap on their UP, that it takes me forever to scroll past it just to get to the GB section. I mean, who really reads/looks at pages and pages of "friendship banners" and fan images for bands anyway? Some people take it a little too far. Music is also unnecessary and creates a lot of lag. I know some people like it, but it's really kind of pointless don't you think?

Anyway, I should probably stop while I'm behind XD. I feel myself getting frustrated thinking about this, and I don't want to rant at you. Though I hope that I have made some valid points. In the end, one thing is certain: something does need to change. If MT is to survive, and not become a hub for lurkers and useless content, things do need to change. At least a little.

Thank you for reading, and take care...

Quote by kuroimisaHi mentis! I'm sorry for having neglected several messages I should have replied to >.< Got a little tied up lately and just ended up forgetting so last night I was lying in bed trying to sleep and suddenly thought "EEK NEED TO REPLY" @__@;;

Quote by mentisYou are very kind to give me a fav AND comment on my piece :D. I appreciate it, to be sure!

I am glad that you like the vector. I have been meaning to do something with that portrait for a long time, and I finally got around to it :D. I think it's an excellent character design to begin with, and I enjoyed making a vector from it!

Yeah, I really liked the character design as well~ it was quite a unique style of art and I liked how you sort of just used blocks of colour in your vector to emphasise that sort of happy-ish feeling. And really, it was a great vector because the lines were so smooth :D I remember the first time I vectored it seemed like I had a jerky mouse XD

And while I'm here, thanks so much for your kind comments and favourites on my recent work :)
I can't wait until your next submission :D
^^/

Well, here I am. Surprise :P. Yes, I have been caught up in life, work, and lots of other things. In the process I completely neglected MT. I am very sorry for not responding.

Thank you very much for your kind words. I haven't actually done any other vectors since then :(. Though I know I should!

I'll have to stop by your page and see what's new over there. I hope to be back on MT a little more often again. I wish we had some kind of email notification for, well anything on MT. That would make it easier to remember. Oh well... the servers are slow enough already though, so I'm sure they couldn't handle such a huge load.

It's nice to hear from you! I've been caught up with life, too >_< *sigh* So it's okay :D Real life is always a priority >D

Hmmm... that's not a bad idea, actually =O
I think I'll bring that up as a suggestion some time for the team to think about.
I guess it won't be *too* hard to have an option somewhere to get email updates... we'll see :)

I hope that life is going well for you :D Hopefully not too busy in the near future ^^/

I imagine that email notifications (like what most forums use) may put quite a lot of strain on the servers, with so many members here. But there is a possibility of limiting the notifications to one per day. That way, if you have any new notifications at the end of the day, an email is sent telling you of them. Instant email notification would be way too intense. And MT is just really slow to begin with these day (and for a long time now). I feel sorry for anyone still using dialup on MT :(.

Anyways. These days I'm keeping up my blog (mentisworks.org), working on a little game project called Copic Fighter (check sidebar on blog), and right now I'm also working on a new painting. The painting is for a show that'll be starting in a couple of weeks, so it will definitely be done soon. When it's finished, I'll certainly put it up on MT :).

Thank you for writing back. I appreciate you taking the time :D. Take care ^_^.

merged: 05-06-2007 ~ 09:28pm

Quote by kuroimisaHmmm yeah, I was thinking of perhaps an option in the control panel you could tick for email notifications- it might be in the form of just stats (you have new notifications) or linked to Minitokyo news announcements (or something long those lines so that it's something that'll make you log in ;)) I don't know how the idea will be implemented (if at all), but I'm hoping they'll consider it. I'll bring it up a few times >D

Oh! I'll go visit that sometime for sure o_o <3 painting! I'll look out for that too XD

Thanks for the PM reminder and all :D Have fun ^__^

Arigato gozaimasu, Misa-chan ^_^. I didn't realize you were a moderator, so yay!

If it's okay to tell you about one other thing related to this, I'd like to bring your attention to the forum as well. I'm part of many forums, and I'm sure you are too. There's always a notification system for threads you posted in when they are replies. But MT doesn't have this. In fact, whenever I want to check if anyone has replied to a thread I posted in (not created mind you) I find it difficult to do. I usually have to go looking through the forum to locate the thread, or use search if the thread is older (assuming I can remember the title). The point is that this is what I see as the cause of a fragmented forum.

Most people I have noticed will reply to a question in the first post, without reading what else has been said, and never visit the thread again. These are not discussions, but random opinions in many threads. I believe that getting a notification about replies, if subscribed, would actually facilitate ongoing discussions.

Anyway, I'm sorry if I got carried away there :P. Though I suppose that having been a member of MT for such a long time, I have observed many changes in the community, not all of which have been positive. I have heard complaints from other long time members as well, and I would like to see MT continue to be a good place.

Thanks for reading all this stuff :P, and for your patience. Let me know what you think...

merged: 05-08-2007 ~ 07:27pm

Quote by kuroimisaLol indeed ^_^

Hmmm. I think we've had a thing like that mentioned before, but I'm not sure if it ever got put forward. But you don't have to dig out those threads ;D

When you go into Control panel, on the left menu there is a list of recently participated threads under where your groups are featured. They expire though, so I guess it's just there for you to keep track of your threads you've posted in, and keep on keeping track of them thus maintaining activity. You might find this particularly useful, if not, we'll see about those notifications.

Hmmm... about those posts not responding to the first post, that's a good thing too. We might write something about that and grab a hold of those people who just post according to the name of the thread ;D

And not a problem: we're all here to try to improve the place ^_^ There's always the little "ohhh I wish that this changed to this" :P

Ah, okay. I haven't noticed this before. That makes it a little easier. Previously I tried getting there by going to CP/Forum Posts, but that doesn't link the threads they were in, so I quickly stopped using that feature. This helps, but of course, as you say, it doesn't tell you if there have been any replies. I believe that a "subscription" option is a must for any forum, and most forums out there have it. In fact, MT is the only forum I belong to that doesn't :P.

Now, maybe I've become a little jaded having been on MT for so long, but maybe there is something to this... It just seems that participation in the MT community, which is so wonderfully encouraged initially (and that's one of the things that drew me to MT), has now become stale and shallow...

To be more specific, I find that many guestbook entries are merely "thanks for the comment/fav." They are impersonal, and not even meant to actually thank the person, but to increase the users post count and raise their participation level. I think the problem with forum posts is also related to this issue, with users posting just to post. As a whole, I see this trend where communication in this community is become impersonal, and less mature. I don't know that there is a whole lot one can do about it, but I am always willing to come up with ideas if so desired.

So that's my take on things. I don't even know if that's helpful at all. But maybe it's at least informative. Thank you for listening, I really appreciate it, Misa-chan ^_^!

Take care...

Lol yeah, I did like Michiavellism, but that was released before the album on a Maxi-single. I actually loved all the maxi singles they released- and then when it came to the album it sounded like a mish mash of unperfected songs that weren't as carefully considered as some other ones- or perhaps you might say, they sounded a bit too safe...? Like sure, the lyrics were still as extreme, but it sounded like there was little variation. Or perhaps it was the opposite and there was far too much experimentation, yet nothing was new...? Thanks for the quick answer misa :). Well i thought i would be like that, but i just wondered (since there seems to be a little laxity in the scan galleries compared to what it used to be a few months ago with the *no ecchi / skin allowed*).

Anyway, i hope you're doing fine. Here is okay, the weather is nice (going to the beach next week end), and the studies are coming along nicely (though the great weather makes it hard to actually work ^_^').

Lol, hi! ^^ Just to reply one by one:

1. I'm not a doujinshi mod, but maybe it was deleted because it was too small (less than 600 000 pixels) or maybe something else... I don't know x_x But you should have gotten a PM from Botchii about it :\ Hmmm.
I suggest just reuploading the new version. If you're not sure if it's ready to go up on the gallery again, post it in the Sandbox for feedback ^^

2. Yup, as long as you use someone's doujinshi (not part of a wallpaper :O), that should be okay. State in your description that you don't know who did it. ^^

3. You want me to close those threads? I'll go ahead and close them- if this wasn't what you meant, tell me and I will open them again.

4. It depends on what you're making the group hate o_o
It'd also be horrible if the group disappeared after spending 100 credits on it. (100 credits is quite a lot !)
You're more than free to make a group, but it must have a specific purpose and generate activity- at the end of the day, it will depend on the group moderator @_@

Hope that was of help! ^^

Yup, Kyo writes all the lyrics ^^ I wasn't very sure because it has been a while since I listened to their stuff. I have their new album on my harddrive from a torrent. The only original album I have of them is "Withering to Death." which was bought in Japan from a friend. Kinda disappointing ^_^' I spent $40 on it and I didn't like the album that much... I've only heard it about twice >.< Whereas I bought an illegal copy of Kisou and enjoyed listening to that a lot @_@

Hehe well glad that work is going well for you ^___^ You can do it!
Well I only had to do the glass thing for like 5 days... it was work experience.

Yeah... time flies! But errr... does time has wings? o_0

Well, I also got some songs from their new album "The Marrow of a Bone" and I must say that the songs I heard like Conceived Sorrow, Rotten Root, The Deeper Vileness, Agitated Screams of Maggots, etc (some of these are on my player on my page so try listening to it when you drop by again), are all CooL! But hey, I kinda liked Dead Tree and Machiavellisem from their album "Withering to Death", but well... it's just my opinion anyway, hehehe! ;) Hahah... piracy, eh? Hmm... I wanna get a job already so that I can make some cash and buy some CDs on Yes Asia! XD want some copy? X-P

Oh really? Gosh, thought you always do it when you're still working! X-P but yeah, it's not really a stressful job (well... if there's nothing much to do, anyway!)! XD

Hehe yeah pretty much ^_^ Well I took the name from Kuroi Misa (they said it was meant to mean "black mass") she was the main character of a manga "Ekoeko Azarak"- was popular in Japan, but nowhere else in the world XD

oo i never heard of that anime. haha, Kuroi Misa sounds like a cool main character tho ^___^
