Oops, I guess I went overboard with the highlight ...
so I darkened it a bit..
actually I kept your suggestion in mind as I worked on this, so I used light
oranges and yellows on this for highlights and dark purples for the shading. I
dunno, I used a lot of soft light and multiply layer blend modes (not brush mode
though) to get more colour contrast, but I'm always hesitant to use dodge or
burn because it tends to make it look too bright...
I did not remember giving you colors to use but using purples for shadows is a
good choice, as for the yellow and oranges for highlights there is still a
better way to do it. For a hint
(more of an answer) research about the complementary color scheme.
I don't use the dodge and burn tool (I actually don't like those tools and don't
use it) but I use the layer and brush mode of color dodge. To be able to
articulate color dodge better you must create a new layer and set it to color
dodge mode then fill it with black then use lighter colors in the ot so
saturated side of the scale(low brush opacity of course)to create the
highlighting then if ever you overdone it you can just brush it with black which
would lessen the luminosity.

dress! now that's a rare sight Wonder what
the fangirls (and Inuyasha) would say to that ^__~ where on earth did you come
up with a concept like that
Nice drawing, I say you did a nice job with the watercolours actually. I like
the way you coloured the background and the highlights on his dresss.
But the wallpaper itself is awesome too Nice
vectoring job, very clean, and good use of textures and gradients (me likes his
hair gradient). hehe, such peaceful and pretty expression that he's got. I see
that you've removed some jewelry from the original (though the details on those
carefully manicured nails are nice -- I wonder where he got his nails done ) I love
those flowers btw, and the pastel palette works nicely ^^ My only complaint
would be the black outline you've used for his dress and face, it looks a little
out of place in the pastel palette, and esp since you've used no outlines or
coloured outlines for everything else.
anyway, awesome work!

btw what happened to his fluffy? (and ooh
look he has two hands
Thank you for your long comment! I also
don't like the black outline but when I was working on this wallpaper I
accidentally merged the layers for his face and body.
After that I tried to put a pastel color outline on his body but the black
outlines were still visible. So in the end I was too lazy to change it all.
Hi Rose, thankx for the advice and comment on my Freedom wall. I will try to fix
the irises, and some outline parts. (lol yea,
I think I've over-smudged the background)
Of course the vector doesn't have to be anime related! The most important thing
is that it's a vector AND it the hardest thing you've ever done. *evil grin*
So, if you want a photo, a photo it will be

Thanks! It helps a lot (esp with the visual ). I added
more colour and light onto the water and sky, as well as some shadows/highlights
to the cliff. and I repainted the scan, adding a bit more shading and changed
the outlines. Just curious, do you use filters and layer blend modes to get the
dynamic colour contrasts, or do you just use plain brushes?
You over highlighted the cliff... rocks don't reflect light as much as the skin
or the clothe esp. the water. The highlight is lighter than the position of the
main light source. Anyway the make-over is better. Why not try another attempt
of a different subject to practice lighting. Light source coming from the rear
of the subject is way harder to calculate than the ones on the side and front
(try this light sources first for a start). Don't worry I know a lot of artist
who are not also good in lighting, so they use references but me on the
otherhand is used in this stuff due to experience. So that means practice can
make it better and enhance your imagination as well.
Just curious, do you use filters and layer blend modes to get the dynamic colour
contrasts, or do you just use plain brushes?
> I use brushes most of the time but I change the brush mode from normal to
color dodge and multiply to quick edit your work. On my works, I also often use
soft light mode for the ambient light and overlay for the dramatic light rays
and sometimes screen as well.
> As for dynamic color contrast you must have an idea on how to use color
harmony and its schemes. If you've read my hint (on POR's page) about highlights
not being white to be effective, somehow the answer to this question is also the
answer to your question in a way. So that is for you to find out. ^^; Sorry if I
can't just give away that tip for now but maybe I'll place it in my digital
painting tutorial that I'll probably release in DA by Feb. For I intend to place
art theories there.
well regarding the scan/character image (I just read the whole thing mi said),
yeah, get rid of the outlines, and for the contrary try to paint with more
strong colors over/near the edges just to make it look like something with shape
and not only some stains of color.
Yeah that's one of the things that I'm still unsatisfied with, the fact that the
scan is more saturated than the background... and the fact that there's a
certain disconnectivity between the foreground and background in terms of
style... I'm not sure if I might have repaint the scan or something... any
suggestions?
The cliff's shading is wrong (or wrong in a realistic lighting setting) in the
sense that the light exposure is the same all through out from the tip of the
cliff to the lower edge of the wallpaper which make it look just like a
traingular flat plane/surface.... to fix that you can create a varying tones
then add a mild gradation of shades from the tip to the lower edge of the wall.
Anyway it is hard to explain with words so I decided to paint over the thumb of
your wall (hope you don't mind). Here is the link of my quick light make-over.
http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i84/mic_kyoko/a.jpg
Additional suggestions. To add more impact you can add more of the proper
texture/surface to all the objects in the wall for example make the cliff more
rock looking.
Hope this helps and I hope you won't get annoyed with me tampering with your
wallie thumb. ^^

Thanks! Yeah I'm still a bit unsatisfied with the girl, because it seems that
she doesn't quite fit with the background yet... it could be due to the outline
(or maybe the colouring style?)... Should I get rid of the outlines altogether
or change it somehow (like changing the colours or erasing bits?
I wouldn't say erase it completely, but maybe tone it down a bit, with a tiny
bit of smudging perhaps.

like the trees and that glass of milk as well as
the moonlight effect The
presents look nice, but I think they need more shadow underneath to make them

there...

Thanks for the comment!
Quote by MapleRosewow, I can't believe
you vectored all of them! and with outlines too! wow, you're really improving on
vectoring
I personally prefer the 1st one, because the background of the 2nd one is too
bright, and a darker background I think makes them stand out more. it also picks
out the colours behind the clouds much better.
Like kuroimisa said, you don't have to use filters for everything. In fact, you
probably don't want to ruin the clean-ness of your vector by filtering over it.
However, maybe filtering those clouds with a median filter can help you get rid
of some of those details (and 'realness')
Took the advice and tried median filter (Though it kind of made the clouds
blad). So I just used smart blur and smudging some parts of the clouds. Added a
little mist/fog next to Cagalli and here's te result. Don't hesitate if there's
some parts that don't please you.
I must agree that the night version looks better than the daytime.
Just checking up! I like the little Edward and Al animation on the top. It's pretty
and hilarious.
I must agree I like the Bunny wallpaper. The bunny is so cute and the background
has a soft texture to it that is so dreamy. It reminds me that I'm going to buy
a bunny someday. ^____^
Quote by MapleRoseyay you updated it!
looks much more balanced in terms of colour now I like
the design of the border, though I think instead of using white, maybe use a
slight blue-ish tint? because I find myself looking at the pattern instead of
the bunny because of the brightness of the border. Also, I'm not sure about the
lack of pattern at the top, it seems to be missing something... even if it's a
few small patterns would make it balance more...
Yeah, I guess it was because the white was too bright that made me feel like I
might have overdid it, now I think it looks better this way after toning done
the brightness a little
Hmmm...I was wondering if I should
border it with the pattern, but I didn't want him to be completely surrounded by
the clouds so I left it open as if he's only above the clouds. But I guess I can
try your suggestion by adding a little of the pattern at the edge so it doesn't
look too empty
And here's the new thanking card I made earlier, thanks for your suggestions!

Quote by MapleRosethe paper texture is
a neat touch. I also like how you kept the pencil cross-hatched shading in as
well, it's a neat effect (just curious, those pencil lines look sepia-ish
instead of grey, did you change the hue in photoshop or something?). The blue is
nice, so are the clouds and shimmery effect of the water However,
I don't quite like the horizon, it's way too sharp, like where the water meets
the sky. Especially since the other elements in your wall are all pretty soft,
it's just weird to see a sharp dividing line for the horizon. Maybe add some
mist, or smudge it a bit?
yes, Zuru looks nice from the backside too
The color is it's original color after I have adjusted the levels to make it
darker.
I don't really know if it's because of the paper or the pencil though.
I didn't want the sky to blend in with the water so I had it visible emphasizing
that this is the sky and this is water cause their all blue
I will try changing it like smudging it as you say
Thanks for the suggestion!
It's stationery! It's actually a letter sheet, but it'd be absolutely criminal to write on it!
Thanks for all your comments. It's always good to hear what people think of my scans; I know I like them, but it's good to know you do too
