Hey beyondmeausre,

Any sites for recommended reading on the topic?

Thanks

Which of them: the evidence against God's existence or the brutality of most of God's laws and their subsequent brutal applcation?

Or both?

In any case, I'd recommend Christopher Hitchen's god is not great and Richard Dawkins' The God Delusion as a good start (if only because they're the only ones I've read when it comes to atheism).

Quote by SulibresThanks for that.

I am looking for both to be honest, and websites would certainly be useful.

There are websites mentioned on the back of Dawkins' book. A particularly interesting website is The-Brights.net (not sure of the spelling here), a website that aims to rebrand us atheists with the name "Bright". Methinks it is a fantastic move, and Dawkins and the philosopher Daniel Dennett have signed up. Problem is, there are people who think of it whole enterprise as too arrogant.

You obviously can't take a joke can you. People prod fun of one another all the time. And to be honest, I don't know why you are typing in this manner; typing normally would help a lot of people to perceive you as a normal person as opposed to someone deliberately doing it to gain attention.

(*looks away*)if that was a joke,it was very mean.....but eitherway im sorry i got like that.........screaming at u and everything....but i HAVE to talk like that cause.....cause....well do u really want me to explain?

Quote by SulibresHey there Yothsothgoth,

Regarding the thread "On Unbelief" I didn't wish to provoke any statements from you except priincess. I admit to being hostile, but only on the grounds that she said things like this:

I rebutted her angrily because to me, what she was saying is that any non believer does not understand goodness and whatever actions they have ever done are completely useless and irrelevant.

In other words, she stated she was better than me. How would you feel if someone told you that you are ignorant, stupid and any actions you have ever committed, even righteous ones are irrelevant because they say so? They even go to the extent in implying that you get irrationally angry and are a cheat and a liar to your own parents.

I know you are Christian, and to be honest I find you one of the more reasonable and intelligent ones at that, but perhaps you could do me a favour and explain to priincess that atheists are not necessarily inhuman or evil.

Thank you,

Sulibres

I can understand your frustration after fully reading the posts. I am shocked and I now see that she is getting out of hand with her posts. Not all Christians believe that way and it makes me a little worried that she, meaning well... is actually just offending others instead of trying to help them understand Christianity. Honestly, I don't know what to say to her to make her understand. BTW, I'd only replied to the topic because of your post... I didn't think of it as any provocation. Your post was the only one I'd read originally. I, myself, had not read the thread entirely and in my own way I was just helping with some possible misinterpretations of the Bible. That's it. I hope you did not think me rude. >_<

I appreciate you talking to me directly about the subject and not being offended (because that was never my intention to offend you or attack you or anyone else, I just wanted to express an opinion and perhaps shed new light on possible interpretations) with my reply to your post. I will try to post something again, but it doesn't mean that she will agree, listen, nor understand. We all do what we can to try to get others to see and believe the way that we, ourselves do... rarely does it work how you plan it. ^_^' Some people take that way of thinking to the extreme and seem to drive people away from how they believe my their lack of tact in their words.

Try to have a better day and feel free to send me another post.
I enjoy our chats here and throughout the forum, but I wish this one had been sparked from a different/better situation.

Quote by SulibresHey Yothsothgoth,

Thanks for the reply. I just felt it would be better if I informed you of my displeasure with priincess personally rather than hoping you would eventually read it on the board.

It's attitudes and religious hypocrisy like that which drives me away from religion: Because a religion is reflected in its followers. I do realize the different sects and even churches of Christianity may preach different things; so I'm not really sure what kind of church priincess goes to for that matter.

Thanks for being reasonable, its just difficult for me now when everyone around me presumes that I need "saving" or is some kind of lost "sheep". The irony in my situation is that I'm always told by some Christians how they, as a people are being persecuted (as stated in the bible) and yet for some reason, just because I lack belief in a God (rare in my country), I am frowned upon for it.

Then again, my lack of a belief in a god does not say the same for my belief in the paranormal; absurd isn't it? A world without Gods or Devils but inhabited by beings of the flesh and beings lacking flesh; both capable of malevolence and benevolence. I feel like I'm living in Lovecraft's world without knowing it.

Sulibres.

(sorry about the late reply)
^^ No worries. I'm just glad that you contacted directly. Its the best way and fastest way to clear up a problem or disagreement. I'm sorry that negative religious attitudes and hypocrisy have driven you from wanting anything to do with religion. That's wrong and I wish people wouldn't do that to others... telling them that they're going to hell, trying to scare them into believing or force them, its not right. Not ever. One of the reasons why my little brother doesn't believe in organized religion is because of what you'd stated. He abhors it and believes that most of the major leaders of all religions are corrupt. He's probably right, but I put my faith in God not men.

I think priincess means well, but she lacks tact in what she states. (I am not and will not make excuses for others actions or words, btw.) Not everyone is blessed with the talent of tactful speech. >_< Sometimes people get really rude to one another in those threads. People don't even take into account how others might interpret what they write. I'm sure that some don't care either. I've always been someone who tried to take everything and everyone else into account before myself. Its the way I've always been and I think its the right thing to do. ^^ I'm not always like that, but I really try to be that way.

The paranormal. ^^ Good subject. :) I have some friends who are Christians and yet do not believe in the paranormal. I can't understand why they don't because the Lutheran church (and many other Christian faiths) say the Apostles' Creed and the Nicene Creed. In it, we Lutherans state that, "We believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible." It could be anything besides Heaven and Hell... to me it can mean that there are things that we cannot see, but they still exist. Perhaps dimensions, perhaps monsters (to us), or angels ... good or bad...(I believe that we can and can't see them... depending on if they want to be seen). I believe in many different types of paranormal activity. I've had plenty of weird occurances happen to me throughout my life (sounds, things I've seen/manifestations, coincidences, things that were too creepy or perfect to happen randomly... etc.) Sometimes I wonder if Lovecraft knew more about the unknown than we think... o_0

Oh, I should note that I'm pretty open about my beliefs so I might be an oddball compared to priincess or to many others who are of the Christian faith. Perhaps I'm weird, but either way... I think everything happens for a reason, but we still have some control over the situation and none over the outcome. ^^ (back to the one thread about independence day and rantings of what religious people do at the end of the world in movies)...I'm still going for a zombie invasion. I'd rather be shooting shit I know how to kill... if it turns out to be aliens, I'll be screwed... and somehow I'd be disappointed. :( Oh, the zombies must be the ones from the original monster movies... not the ones that run up to you (28 Days Later/Raccoon City's Resident Evil), those just aren't the zombies I've grown to know and love. XD ...perhaps the ones from the Evil Dead/Army of Darkness would be interesting too. At least they'd make me laugh before I shot 'em with my boom stick. XD

...I'm so weird. ^_^'

Quote by SulibresHey Alex, had to delete my previous entry so you could see this one. I'm not so good at the moment so I have not been online in a while.

How have things been with you? Life's been rather unpleasant on my side and I'd rather leave it at that. The world's been getting more and more "unstable" and I'm contemplating the possibilities of a post apocalyptic world and whether I should join the rebels, communists or fascists.

Sulibres.

That sucks, and life hasn't been so great for me either.. :(

I don't think you'll have to worry about that anytime soon. :P

I noticed that you and a many others are still refuting Kingray's arguments, yet it has all come to naught.

I only have to say that you cannot reason with the "mentally ill": Christianity was built on the foundation of society's rejects and idiots so how could one expect it to have intelligent answers to the problems of the world?

Wistfully,

Sulibres

Very true, not really worth debating with them is it. Quite a waste of time.

r q g

Thanks for your input on my "Separation of Church and State" thread.
Yes many religions are very imperialistic from the standpoint that they are always seeking new converts but there interference/meddling in politics results in the religions becoming twisted by power and the interests of a few people. After all how would the three major religions be today if they had merely supported the people instead of trying to gain power through the governments. I think we would be alot better off that we are today if that had been the case.
