well, the key to make good bgs is a combination of inspiration and knowledge
^^'
in my case walls appear like that
look at a scan, see the character in a pretty landscape, and so you start to
work in it
first if you see the scan of your chara is too little or is too messy i
recommend u to vector it, u can vector on photoshop or illustrator (well i
vector with those two) then u make the background, stocks and brushes may help u
with this part but have to really have a good management of them to make them
look nice, other option is to vector the bg too (its better cause u draw it
yourself ^^)

dont do that is too messy, the number of layers depends on the number of
separated elements youre placing, use layers to order all your separated
elements (make sure to name them if there are a lot ^^its better and easier to
find like that)
